Basic Rug Hooking Instructions
Before you being: Cut yarn or
fabric strips into approximately 2 feet pieces.
1 Stretch the canvas in a hoop
or frame with the design facing up. Rest the hoop or frame on a table or
your lap. (The thumbscrew of a hoop should be opposite you).
2 With
your left hand (right hand if you're a leftie) hold the end of the yarn
or fabric strip between your thumb and forefinger.

3 With your right hand, hold the
hook as if it were a pencil, with your fingertips on the metal collar as shown.
4 Hold the wool in your left
hand and put it beneath the canvas. With your right hand, push the hook down
through the mesh. The shaft of the hook should touch your left forefinger and
slide behind the woolen strip. Push the wool onto the hook with your left thumb.
5 With the hook, pull the end of
the strip through to the front of backing with the hook, to a height of about
1/2".
6 Push the hook down through the
canvas a little to the left of the strip's end and catch the strip underneath.
Pull up a 1/8" loop, or as high as the strip is wide. To prevent pulling out the
previous loop, lean the hook back toward the previous loop as you pull up
another loop.
7 Working from left to right,
make even loops that gently touch each other. Never put more than one loop in a
hole.

8 When you reach the end of
the woolen strip or yarn, pull the end up through the canvas (on the
top). Pull all ends through to the front as you hook.
9 Start the next strip in
the same hole in which the last strip ended, again leaving a 1/2 inch
tail.
10 Trim the ends even with
the loops after making several loops with the new strips.
11 Continue the hooking
process until the pattern is complete. To keep the back of the rug from
becoming lumpy, do not cross a row of hooking with another strip.
